Kitty Hanson’s 1962 series in The Daily News titled Girl Gangs of New York, shared her in-depth account of life among the toughest girl gangs of the boroughs’ slums, bringing this overlooked segment of youth out of the shadows. Initially established as auxiliaries to the boy street gangs, girl gangs quickly came into their own, as accomplished street brawlers who indulge in brutal physical assaults, larceny, and murder. The barely teenage girls that comprised the gangs virtually all shared the desire to “be somebody.” Girl gangs spread across the US and could be found in Detroit, Los Angeles, Honolulu and several other major cities.
Nimbostratus clouds are dark, grey, featureless layers of cloud, thick enough to block out the Sun.
