Atomic City reflects the cultural afterglow of the atomic testing era, when the spectacle of nuclear detonation became woven into everyday American culture. As mushroom clouds rose over the Nevada desert, families invested in bomb shelters, and the atomic energy symbol appeared in advertising, toys, and comics. A sign of annihilation was recast as novelty, progress, and design.

The work considers this uneasy duality. Dread transformed into entertainment.

Atomic City is a companion to Doomtown, currently on loan at The Atomic Museum in Las Vegas.

Mushroom clouds from the tests became both a spectacle and a symbol of the era. These early dawn atmospheric tests could be seen up to 100 miles away in the distance.
